Known in Islam as the People of the Cave
(Ahl al-Kahf in Arabic), the Seven Sleepers are said to have miraculously slept for several centuries in a cave in order to escape from the persecutions of the Roman Empire. Their awakening is a metaphor for the resurrection
of the body, in both Christianity and in Islam
(Qur’anic sura ‘The Cave’). The narratives
of the Seven Sleepers were widely disseminated. Numerous caves in the Mediterranean region are considered to be sacred places where this miracle occurred. This legend has sometimes given rise to joint veneration by Christians and Muslims.

Istanbul: Muslims at the Saint George Monastery
LePictorium_0143214.jpg
Group of young Muslim women writing their wishes and lighting candles in front of the monastery.
Saint George is one of the figures who has led
to most cross-fertilisations between Christians and Muslims in the eastern Mediterranean. Off the coast of Istanbul, on the summit of the island of Büyükada, is the Greek Orthodox monastery of Saint George.
Celebrations of the saint’s feast day on 23 April draw as many as 100,000 people, many of them Muslims. Most of them come to make wishes, which take various ritual forms. Aya Yorgi is popular because he is reputed to be efficacious and makes no distinction between Christians and Muslims.
The monastery of Saint George is a "shared holy places" by believers from different faith.
Tunisia : Pilgrimage to the Ghriba Synagogue
LePictorium_0143133.jpg
Children depositing votive coins in an oil lamp.
Every year for the celebration of Lag Ba'Omer, Tunisian Jews -who emigrated in the twentieth century in Europe, North America and Israel- go in pilgrimage to the Ghriba synagogue in the island of Djerba. In addition to the religious dimension, this event is also a pilgrimage of memory. The peaceful "convivencia" with Muslims is valued, despite the attack of Al Qaeda in 2002. Today, the site is still frequented by some Muslim and remains one of the last cases of peaceful interaction between Jews and Muslims. It is a "shared holy place"
