Sheep from the park of La Courneuve, graze at the Vertus gardens in Aubervilliers. Located near the D27 connecting Aubervilliers to Bobigny, in the northeast of Paris, the Vertus allotments had an area of 62,000 m² when they were created in 1932. Over the years, about two-thirds of this area has been cut down, notably by the construction of a large parking lot near the metro.

Plum trees, cherry trees, fig trees, olive trees. Many of the trees are over 70 or 80 years old and have been passed down from gardener to gardener, bringing a lot of freshness to the garden, especially during the heat wave.

The fertile lands of the Plaine des Vertus have been cultivated since the Middle Ages on former marshes and these market gardens supplied Paris. Since 1935, they have always kept the spirit of the allotment gardens, a place for meetings, sharing and conviviality, with their bric-a-brac appearance.

Hubert took over his father-in-law's plot in the Pantin gardens, which adjoin the Vertus gardens, some thirty years ago. Tireless defender of a popular and e is a tireless advocate of a popular ecology accessible to all, and has at heart to share this natural space with the youth of Aubervilliers and Pantin. For the next development of the gardens, he was asked that the branches of his magnificent fig tree do not reach more than 2m in height to better integrate into the new landscape.

The gardeners' sheds are made of bricks and mortar, of salvaged objects that gardeners pass on to each other as a heritage. In the perspective of a new eco-neighborhood at the foot of the Fort d'Aubervilliers, the municipality would like to redesign the alleys of these gardens and replace all these sheds by plastic garden sheds.

The gardeners who leave leave their huts, often with some of their tools and crops, to the newcomers. Many learn to farm by co-opting another gardener. Hubert and his wife learned to grow their vegetable garden on their own.
"Under the critical eye of my father-in-law sitting in his chair," Hubert laughs. This computer scientist at the Ministry of Agriculture devotes almost all his weekends to it as soon as spring arrives.

Many gardeners emphasize growing "organic" produce, without fertilizers. Some perpetuate old vegetables that are no longer talked about, tomatoes that are no longer found elsewhere. For many, their crops are also an important means of subsistence.

Ernest got his land 5 years ago. He lives just across the street from the Jardins des vertus. For him, the gardens are above all a place of conviviality where many lonely people meet. Two thirds of his plot will be cut down. He has been offered another plot in the Pantin gardens which adjacent to the gardens of the virtues. But he will be able to exploit it only But he will only be able to use it until 2024 because another redevelopment project threatens these gardens.

Dolores, involved in the struggle, protests against the destruction of part of the gardens. Just arrived on the plot of one of his friends, Ziad, she learned that they are threatened. "We mobilized since June 2020. And from the beginning, the politicians lied to us, saying that we would only be bothered by the rubble. But we learned at the end of July 2020 that it was the solarium, the spa and the fitness center that were going to be built on the gardens. There are too many imminent stakes in terms of destruction of biodiversity, of species, of the land. Defending the gardens is important. This change will be collective, creative and supportive."

Some gardeners, like Dolores, organize workshops by sharing their knowledge with other gardeners. Before Covid,
students from the city's schools regularly visited the gardens. Dolores also collected seeds from the amputated gardens
to perpetuate their crops.

Hocine has been pampering his plot of land for eight years. On his 400 m2 plot, the former engineer has dug the earth, built a hut with his hands, planted fruits, vegetables, three fig trees and two plum trees. This garden is his "oxygen", his "corner of paradise", his "secret for keeping health". He who lives in Aubervilliers knows how lucky he is to enjoy this green space "in the middle of all this concrete".

Hocine feels totally distressed to know that his plot of land will be largely concreted. And especially to see the destruction of the wooden hut that he has built with his son, hard and dearly. No financial compensation was made to him. He was only assured that some of the trees assured that some of the trees he planted will be replanted on his new plot in the gardens of Pantin which adjoin the
virtues. "Only verbal promises!" He worries that in a few weeks he'll see the ballet of trucks coming in to clearing out the vegetable gardens.

The training pool will be built on the site of the existing parking lot. But gardeners discovered just a year ago that a 2,000-square-meter mineral and plant solarium, a fitness and cardio-training area, and a Finnish village
with saunas and steam rooms will extend beyond the pool, encroaching on 10,000 m2 of the gardens.
