Karin and Abdi Rahman (16 years old), oldes of a family of 8. They left Somalia for Kenya and then Vancouver with fake ids. They were then shuttled to Winnipeg in a van, driving non-stop for 3 days and abandoned close by the association where Karin works. He can speak good english which was a chance for them. 4 boys and 3 girls, from 9 to
16, were threatened in Somalia: the boys would have been forced to become children soldiers and the girls sex slaves or forced wives.

Bashir Khan is a lawyer, he represented Yayah and others, here at a CBC national media/radio organised meeting to discuss the refugee situation, especially the border jumpers. All points of view are represented: pro- and anti- migrants. Economy issues are also raised, as well as security of the inhabitants of Manitoba, particularly the people living in the towns close by the border. The fear about islam and
terrorism questions are there but never directly addressed.

This young man came to better understand the situation. He voices his doubts concerning the loophole and doesn’t like the fact that the people jumping the border have the advantage of having their claims treated faster than the refugees using the “normal way”.
