Preparing for the day. Vehicles and boxes of seedlings were brought by barges during the preparation phase a few days before. Some of the blocs necessitate several days of planting and can be separated by kms. The planted species are endemic and very valuable: western red cedar, sitka spruces, yellow cedar...

For this operation the planters were based in Port Hardy and were commuting every day using float planes to the inlets where the planting was happening. Sometimes they live on a boat for the duration of the operation, going from inlet to inlet in remote places.

Chad was one of the pilots. The planes are Beavers and Turbo Beavers. They take up to 6 to 8 people, plus personal equipment.

LePictorium_0133512.jpg
Jennifer in action, boots are obviously corcked. Slopes are often very steep and the terrain buried in slash and bushes (like salmonberries, with thorns)

Chris in action. The best of planters read the terrain as surfers read the ocean. Planting is paid as "piece work", about 25 to 30 cents/seedling depending on conditions... The best ones, nicknamed highballers, can plant up to 2000 seedlings per day.

Jennifer with some anti-bug equipment. Bugs (black flies, mosquitoes, horse flies) are a real nuisance but (or maybe therefore) the planters always keep a strange and pretty specific sense of humor.

Kelly in a heli-bloc. Heli logging means loggers and trees are moved by helicopter, therefore the planters as well. There are no roads getting to the blocs. These blocs are very hard in terms of steepness and slash. Often an assistant is posted as "grizzly watch" with a whistle.
